Butch Boutry travelled the world coaching Canada's best skiers — and still preferred his hometown mountain. In 1975 he came back to Rossland to prove it.

The story
Born and raised in Rossland, Butch grew up racing on Red Mountain before skiing for the Canadian National Ski Team. He went on to coach the National Team through the mid-seventies — putting together the squad that would become the original Crazy Canucks — then spent years building Canada's disabled ski program, taking the World's Disabled Ski Team to the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
Through all of it, he preferred skiing at home. In 1975 he returned to Rossland and opened the ski shop that carries his name. Soon after, he met Enza — also born and raised in Rossland — and together they built it into the shop it is today.
Look around when you visit: the posters and awards on the walls feature Butch and many of the Canadian National and Olympic skiers he worked with.

Became Head Coach of the National Disabled Ski Team.
Led the World’s Disabled Ski Team at the Calgary Olympics as a demonstration sport.
Inducted into the Canadian Ski Coaches Hall of Fame.
Still family-run by Butch and Enza — the longest-running business in Rossland.
Butch is a Level 4 coach with a lifetime membership in the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation, a former course director for the CSCF, and former Western Program Director for the Canadian Ski Association. He also coached the Red Mountain Racers and taught at Mont Tremblant.

In 48 years the shop has employed only five full-time people. That kind of longevity is rare anywhere — in ski retail it's almost unheard of. It means the person helping you has probably helped a thousand skiers before you, on this same floor, under the same posters.
